Staying Safe While Studying Abroad
Traveling abroad is exciting, empowering, and life-changing, but it’s also important to be informed, prepared, and proactive when it comes to your personal safety. Safe travel is crucial, especially in today’s world, where students studying internationally are navigating a more complex travel landscape, both abroad and when returning home.
At GLO, we believe safety starts before takeoff and continues after return. Here are smart, general precautions every student should take to ensure a safe and smooth experience.
Before You Travel
1. Review Passport, Visa, and Entry Requirements Carefully
Every country has its own entry requirements, and they can change rapidly. Check for:
- Visa expiration dates and conditions
- Required travel documents (return tickets, proof of accommodation, proof of funds)
- COVID-era or post-COVID health forms, if any still apply
Tip: Make digital and paper copies of your passport, visa, and key documents and store them separately.
2. Register with the U.S. Embassy (or Your Home Country’s)
Enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) if you’re a U.S. citizen. This allows the embassy to contact you in case of emergency and keeps you updated on safety advisories.
3. Know the Laws and Norms
Understand the local laws and customs of your host country, what’s legal, what’s respectful, and what’s risky. Something ordinary at home might be inappropriate or even illegal abroad.
4. Secure Your Digital Presence
- Avoid sharing detailed travel plans on public social media.
- Enable two-factor authentication on your devices and email.
- Clear your browsing history and update privacy settings before departure and re-entry.
While Abroad
5. Use a Safety App and Share Your Location
Stay connected with your group and GLO staff. Many students use apps like WhatsApp or Life360 to check in with family or trip leaders.
6. Keep Emergency Contacts Handy
Have a written list of emergency contacts:
- Local emergency services
- GLO on-site leader or host partner
- U.S. Embassy or consulate
- Health insurance provider
7. Practice Situational Awareness
Keep an eye on your surroundings, avoid walking alone late at night, and trust your instincts. Don’t hesitate to remove yourself from uncomfortable or unfamiliar situations.
8. Understand Your Insurance Coverage
Make sure you know:
- What your travel insurance covers
- How to contact your insurer abroad
- Where to go for medical care if needed
GLO provides insurance for all students, and our staff are trained to assist you in the event of illness or injury.
Re-Entering the U.S. (or your home country)
9. Prepare for Customs and Border Screening
Have your documents easily accessible, and be prepared to answer questions about:
- Your time abroad
- Items you’re bringing home
Stay calm, polite, and answer truthfully. Border protocols vary and may occasionally involve additional screening.
10. Be Mindful of What You Share Online
Some travelers choose to limit public posts during their trip and upon re-entry, especially if they include political opinions, sensitive topics, or photos from high-security areas. When in doubt, keep it private.
GLO Is With You the Whole Way
GLO staff are on-site for our open programs programs to support students, handle emergencies, and navigate changing situations. Our team also prepares you before departure with safety briefings, cultural orientations, and re-entry planning.
Studying abroad is an incredible opportunity, but staying informed and proactive helps you make the most of it, safely and confidently.
