Inspired by reflections from GLO alumna Maria Beltran
When most students think of studying abroad, Europe is the default. But there’s another region that combines fast-paced business growth with breathtaking cultural experiences: Southeast Asia.
Maria Beltran, a past participant in the GLO (formerly IBS) Southeast Asia program, shared that the experience left her with lessons she’ll carry forever:
“The cultural impact is tremendous… I was impressed by how much my personal values and those in Vietnam and Thailand impact the business world. This GLO (International Business Seminar) to Southeast Asia was just as priceless and full of lifelong memories as the European Seminar.” – Maria Beltran
Business Beyond Borders
What makes the Southeast Asia program unique is the direct access students get to global companies operating in local contexts. Maria recalls visits to leading organizations like Intel, Edwards Lifesciences, and Osprey Packs.
At Intel’s Vietnam site, students learned how the tech giant adapts to local regulations, workforce dynamics, and even cultural expectations.
“Because of the over-susceptibility of corruption in Vietnam, accountability and integrity are strongly encouraged and emphasized.” – Maria Beltran
At Edwards Lifesciences, the focus shifted to innovation in healthcare. Maria was struck not only by the groundbreaking heart valve technology but also by the way the company prioritized patient care and respect, creating a culture of compassion that extended from California to Southeast Asia.
“Their appreciation for us visiting came across abundantly, and I felt it should’ve been the other way around since they were allowing us the opportunity to learn from them.” – Maria Beltran
Osprey Packs, on the other hand, showcased the craftsmanship behind premium outdoor gear. Seeing how quality and design translated across borders gave students insight into global supply chains and the realities of manufacturing abroad.
Lessons in Culture
Beyond boardrooms, the program immerses students in the everyday life of Thailand and Vietnam. Maria highlighted the contrasts and similarities that left lasting impressions.
In Bangkok, the busy streets, scooters weaving through traffic, and towering high-rises reflected a city growing at breakneck speed. Yet what stayed with Maria most was the kindness of locals and the Buddhist philosophy woven into daily life.
“One of the things I found so beautiful was how much they believe in Buddha’s philosophy in both their way of life as well as in how they do business.” – Maria Beltran
She described her visit to an elephant sanctuary as a highlight, an eye-opening reminder of compassion, conservation, and the value of shared experiences.
“We were able to bathe with the elephants, make their food, feed them, and see the compassion the Thai people have for these animals.” – Maria Beltran
In Ho Chi Minh City, students saw another side of Southeast Asia: street food markets, motorbikes filling every corner, and a culture deeply rooted in respect for family and community.
“The Vietnamese believe everything must be properly handled when doing business by keeping face, avoiding controversy, and always working to keep positive relationships.” – Maria Beltran
One unique lesson? The exchange of business cards is treated as a sign of honor and respect, something Americans often overlook. Maria also reflected on how family reputation carries immense weight, influencing both personal and professional interactions.
Why It Matters
The value of a program like this goes beyond sightseeing. It prepares students for the reality of a globalized workforce. You don’t just learn about GDP growth rates or case studies, you experience them. You begin to see how culture, history, and values shape the way business is done.
“It forced me to recognize how different the business world is in the United States versus in Asian countries, but also how similar they can be.” – Maria Beltran
